The man who fatally stabbed six people in Sydney had mental health issues in the past and there was no indication ideology was a motive in the attack in one of the city's busiest shopping centres, police said on Sunday. Cauchi's family recognised him and contacted police on Saturday after seeing news reports of the killings. Witnesses described how Cauchi, wearing shorts and an Australian national rugby league jersey, ran through the Westfield Bondi Junction mall with a knife. "This was a terrible scene," New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke told reporters. Five of the six people killed were women, and the male victim was a shopping centre security guard, police said.

CNN —A 53-year-old man died Sunday during the swimming leg of the Noosa Triathlon in Australia. Queensland Police said a man, from Victoria, Australia, was pulled from the water in the early morning and was found unresponsive. “Emergency services attempted to revive the man, but he was declared deceased at the scene,” a police spokesperson said. In a statement on Facebook, the Noosa Triathlon said it was “deeply saddened” to confirm the death of a race participant. In addition to the world class field of athletes, the triathlon also caters for non-competitive participants.

Tanya Lee Glover, born in 1971, was vision and hearing impaired, and would have been approximately 38 years old at the time of her death, Queensland Police said in a statement on Thursday. Her body was found partially buried and was tightly wrapped in clothing and bedding, police said at the time. Tanya Lee Glover's death was "concerning and peculiar," detective superintendent Andrew Massingham told reporters on August 10, 2023. A low resolution photograph of Glover released by police shows a smiling woman with shoulder length brunette hair and glasses. Detectives appealed for anyone who may have known Glover or had any interactions with her, particularly during 2006 to 2010, to contact authorities.

CNN —A former childcare worker has been charged with 1,623 child abuse offenses allegedly carried out against 91 children in Australia and elsewhere over 15 years, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a statement on Tuesday. The 45-year-old man from the Gold Coast has been in police custody since August 2022, when he was initially charged with making child exploitation material and using a carriage service to distribute it. “This is one of the most horrific cases of alleged child abuse our detectives have seen,” Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald with the New South Wales police said in a news conference. Other charges include hundreds of counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16 years, counts of making child exploitation material and other charges related to possessing, producing, distributing or obtaining child exploitation material. The AFP said it is working with international authorities to help identify four children recorded in the alleged child abuse material overseas.

CNN —Remains found inside a crocodile in Australia are believed to belong to a 65-year old fisherman who went missing over the weekend, according to local police. The two crocodiles were 4.1 meters (13.5 feet) and 2.8 meters (9.2 feet), police said in a statement. According to DES, the “vast majority” of attacks are carried out by crocodiles larger than two meters (over six feet). Human remains were found within one of the crocodiles, though police officers believe both were involved in the incident with Darmody, the statement added. “There was a noise, a loud yell, and then the sound of the water splashing.”“It’s a national park and there are wild animals up there, wild crocodiles,” he added.
